A Submersible

Rowena Hughes

For her contribution of site-related research material, Rowena Hughes has submitted photographs taken in recent months from her studio in Hackney, East London. Some of the images highlight recent processes in her work. Hughes is making a series of books out of old books. Taking apart second hand textbooks, printing text and images on top of the existing pages and then rebinding the books. In addition, there is an image
of a map recording dice throws so that the number of dots can be painted accurately. Also, several images show piles of papers on Hughes's desk. Working in a particular place for a long period of time has allowed her to do lots of collecting and reshuffling of images and sometimes things end up next to each other in just the right way. Hughes has also submitted an  image of a collection of stock photographs of light bulbs
which form part of the
book she's working on. Two photographs show sunlight shining on the studio walls. Hughes has said that the weird late afternoon slants of sunlight have led to long shadows in some her work.
